Description
This 2007 production from the Chemnitz Opera House updates the opera's plot and other aspects of the original libretto to a louche, 1930s environment (e.g., Manon is more femme fatale than innocent; Geronte is also a young man like des Grieux; the lovers end up in a subway tunnel instead of en route to Louisiana). You can entertain the rationale for all this by viewing the extras (cast and director interviews), but in the end, Puccini's glorious music conquers all. In the original novel by Abbe Prevost—made into operas by both Massenet and Puccini—Manon Lescaut is a headstrong beauty torn between true love and a life of luxury. "Massenet feels the subject as a Frenchman, with the powder and the minuets," Puccini said. "I shall feel it as an Italian, with desperate passion."

"Astrid Weber as Manon is first class."—Opernwelt

"A magnificent event."—Opernglas

"A really powerful scene … [occurs] just before the end. These are the moments we go to the opera for."—Deutschlandradio Kultur

"Today, audiences may not be quite so quick to dismiss Manon as a woman of loose morals. In fact, she could easily be seen as a sort of forward-thinking, iron-willed heroine—a woman who knew what she wanted and simply set about getting it. So, who was Manon? Feminist, or Floozy? We'll reserve judgment—and urge you to check out the opera and decide for yourself."—NPR
