Description
With a libretto adapted by Arrigo Boito from Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor and scenes from Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2, Giuseppe Verdi's Falstaff is a late-career work suffused with humor and a tenderness for humanity. Composed when he was nearly 80, this zesty opera remains a great favorite with audiences and performers alike. Donald Gramm was a famed Sir John Falstaff, and he's surrounded by top-drawer colleagues in this 1976 performance, recorded live at the Glyndebourne Festival.

"What makes this Falstaff work so brilliantly … is the superb direction of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle…. How well he directs his cast, brings out animation as well as naturalness, and pulls everything together!... One cannot say enough good things about the singing of Gramm and the four ladies."—Fanfare

"It's quite an enjoyable performance…. Gramm provided extraordinary verbal clarity and nuance, seemingly in any language…. Like Gramm, Luxon relished words; as Ford, he allows us to do the same, offering finesse in phrasing, dynamic subtlety and good sound."—Opera News

"These singers have lived in their roles for long enough that everything comes naturally to them, and there is never the slightest suggestion of exaggerated mugging or hamming for comic effect…. Falstaff has been a lucky opera on video, with many recommendable productions available, but this must be counted among the best of them."—Musicweb International
