Description
Aptly and beautifully honoring the Benjamin Britten centennial, this reissued live recording of his chamber opera (based on the Henry James novel) was captured at the Schwetzingen SWR Festival in 1990. A co-production between the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, and the Cologne Opera, it was conducted by Britten specialist Steuart Bedford.

"This gripping performance … is the most compelling and consistently satisfying of all the Britten operas currently available on DVD…. The handsome, monochromatic production … is dominated by the Welsh soprano, Helen Field, who leads the cast with a brilliantly detailed performance of the Governess."—Opera Canada

"One of those rare operas that combines one of the most sophisticated narratives of literature with an equally sophisticated logic of musical structure. The musical execution provides all that one could wish from a Britten opera. Bedford conducted this ensemble with clarity and precision, and much of the camera work tended to facilitate appreciating the variations providing the interludes. All vocalists performed with the same high level of clarity."—The Examiner
