Description
This epitome of verismo opera, Umberto Giordano's Fedora has it all: passion, intrigue, murder, revenge, and betrayal. As the two leads, opera legends Mirella Freni (La Principessa Fedora Romazoff) and Plácido Domingo (Il Conte Loris Ipanoff ) demonstrate in this 1993 La Scala performance why they have transfixed audiences for decades.

"Freni's acting is not only brilliant, her great personality on the stage adds an extra dimension to the whole opera, which stands or falls with the protagonist's role…. Domingo's performance is one of great conviction; dignified, but at the same time lush and abundant. His singing is marvelously concentrated and ideally suited for this music. The rest of the cast is very satisfying as well; to name just a few: Silvia Mazzoni as the young boy Dimitri, and Alessandro Corbelli as De Siriex the diplomat. Gavazzeni keeps control over singers and orchestra with a calm and lyrical Italian hand."—Fanfare

"Both Freni and Domingo were at the height of their powers. Both sing magnificently and very movingly … and all the supporting roles are well filled by singers who know what they are about. The very experienced Gianandrea Gavazzeni, La Scala's principal conductor from 1948 until his death in 1996, applies all his vast experience to the score with which both he and his players are in evident sympathy. Sets and costumes are evocative and effective and the direction for TV and video is unobtrusively efficient."—Musicweb International
