Description
Giuseppe Verdi's source for this tragic opera, his ninth, was Attila, King of the Huns by German playwright Zacharias Werner. Attila explores a pivotal moment in history—the collapse of the Roman Empire under brutal attacks from the "barbarians," led by the opera's title character. As with Nabucco and I Lombardi, Verdi wrote patriotic choruses alluding to the Italian movement for unification, contributing to the opera's great success. Bulgarian opera star Orlin Anastasov portrays Attila in this production, recorded in 2011 at the impressive medieval stronghold of the Tsaverets Fortress in Bulgaria.

"Solera's episodic libretto concocts a suitably exciting love triangle between Attila, Odabella (the daughter of the Lord of Aquileia, murdered by Attila) and Foresto, Odabella's lover, presumed dead. Misunderstandings, political wrangling (between Attila and the Roman envoy, Ezio), betrayals, and enforced weddings inspire some of Verdi's best early period music…. There are already glimmers in his ninth opera of the masterpiece to follow: Macbeth."—Fanfare
