Description
With the action credibly advanced a few centuries (to 1940s Spain) this 2005 production of Don Giovanni was recorded live at Madrid's Teatro Real in 2005. Lorenzo Da Ponte based his libretto on the well-known story of the unrepentant libertine, dramatized in the 17th century by Spanish playwright Tirso de Molina. Don Ottavio's two great arias, "Dalla sua pace" and "Il mio tesoro" are essential parts of tenor repertoire; other highlights include Leporello's catalogue song of Giovanni's conquests and Giovanni's exquisite duet with Zerlina, "Là ci darem la mano." Bonuses include interviews with stage director Lluis Pasqual, Carlos Álvarez (Don Giovanni), and conductor Víctor Pablo Pérez.

"A pleasure to watch.... You have to admire the way Maria José Moreno, as a slightly frail Zerlina, manages to knock off the beginning of 'Vedrai, carino' while riding on a bike…. María Bayo does well as Donna Anna, expertly catching her transformation from self-confident spitfire (she grabs Don Giovanni's knife and nearly stabs him in the opening scene) to a woman aged by the weight of her double trauma.... José Bros as Don Ottavio is notable both for his strength … and for his liquid beauty of tone. The orchestra plays well, with tight winds and excellent balances."—Fanfare
