Description
George Braziller is one of the great small publishers of the golden age of American publishing. When other publishers have been gobbled up by corporate entities, Braziller has remained independent, and continued to produce books that epitomize the taste and discernment that one might only find in an independent house. Now 100 (yes, you read that right), Braziller, only recently retired from running his eponymous publishing house, has written a memoir of his life and work. He's a modest man, so had to be cajoled into doing so. In short vignettes he shares his early years in Depression-era Brooklyn, his time in the Army in World War II, and his experiences as publisher of such literary and artistic figures as Orhan Pamuk, Janet Frame, Nathalie Sarraute, and Jean-Paul Sartre, as well as encounters with Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Marilyn Monroe, and many others. Long-time Daedalus customers will remember the beautiful monographs of the work of Hiroshige and Hokusai, and Masterpieces of Japanese Screen Painting. His art list was extraordinary, and included works by such critics as Meyer Schapiro, and seminal volumes in art history, like Jazz by Matisse and numerous works on early illuminated manuscripts, including Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry and The Tale of Genji. As one would expect from such a publisher, the plates in the book—some from his life and some of his favorite publications—are sumptuously reproduced. It's a pleasure to share such a long, inspiring life, as we can here.
