Description
In this 10th Crowner John mystery, set in 1195, Prince John plots to seize the throne from his brother, Richard the Lionheart. To help the pretender pay for his scheme, King Philip of France offers to send him the mysterious Mohammedan alchemist Nizam, who supposedly can transmute base metals into gold. But Nizam's ship is found wrecked off the south Devon coast, its crew savagely slaughtered. Not long after, Peter le Calve, a Norman knight living near Exeter, is butchered and his head is stuck upon the rood screen of Exeter's cathedral. King's Crowner John de Wolfe not only suspects these killings are related, he also wonders what his brother-in-law, the disgraced ex-sheriff Richard de Revelle, is trying to hide. Appointed to the office of the Keeper of the Pleas of the King's Crown in the last years of the 12th century, former Crusader knight John de Wolfe is a King's Crowner, or coroner, assigned to oversee local sheriffs and investigate all sudden deaths, murders, rapes, assaults, fires, wrecks, and catches of royal fish in Devon. Though John himself is fictional, in this humorous series from real-life pathologist Bernard Knight, many of the people he meets are real historical figures.
