Description
When an unknown body is discovered in the harbor town of Axmouth, 20 miles from Exeter, the King's Crowner is called to investigate, in this 12th mystery in the series (following The Noble Outlaw). The manner of the young man's death is a matter of some dispute, though as Sir John soon discovers, it was no accident; he did not drown, as the manor reeve alleges, but rather was strangled to death. Sir John's investigation is thwarted by a conspiracy of silence among the seamen and townsfolk. It seems there are those who would do anything to keep the truth hidden, and Sir John realizes he may not escape from Axmouth with his life. Appointed to the office of the Keeper of the Pleas of the King's Crown in the last years of the 12th century, former Crusader knight John de Wolfe is a King's Crowner, or coroner, assigned to oversee local sheriffs and investigate all sudden deaths, murders, rapes, assaults, fires, wrecks, and catches of royal fish in Devon. Though John himself is fictional, in this humorous series from real-life pathologist Bernard Knight, many of the people he meets are real historical figures.

"Detection and suspense are combined with historical authenticity."Daily Mail (London)
