Originally published in 1993, this is a lovely and unexpected tale about an odd friendship, for readers 6 to 9. The mushroom man spends his days in the dark, sleeping while the sun is up and then coming out at night to harvest his mushrooms. Children tease him because of his odd appearance, since he looks a bit like a mushroom himself, but the mushroom man doesn't mind. He is lonely though, until one night he meets an animal friend who is a perfect companion for him.
"This is a sweet, quiet story with a special message.... [Barry] Moser's realistic pictures are dark with just a glimmer of light. They reinforce the quiet, emotive quality of the narrative and are a fine accompaniment to the story."—School Library Journal
