Description
American conductor Thomas Schippers (1930–77) died young, and these 1955–74 recordings form part of his memorable legacy. They include Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony no. 5 in B-flat Major, op. 100; Franceso Durante's Concerto no. 5 for String Orchestra; Gioachino Rossini's Le Siège de Corinthe Overture; Antonio Salieri's Axur, re d'Ormus Overture; and Antonio Vivaldi's transcendent Sinfonia in B Minor, RV 169 ("Al Santo Sepolcro"), reminiscent of Albinoni's and Barber's great adagios.

"The famous Adagio molto movement of the Vivaldi is heartbreakingly intense, and the adorable Durante concerto and Salieri overture (very Mozartean!) could launch new revivals for these composers…. This 1957 recording of the Fifth Symphony also is a benchmark…. He is imposing without being heavy, and again, there's a strong lyrical core running through the work. Among Western conductors, his interpretation is the most Russian."—Classical Net
