Description
Profoundly influenced by Spanish mission design, Southern Californian architect Irving J. Gill was a modernist before anyone had coined the term, and along with Bernard Maybeck, Charles and Henry Greene, and R.M. Schindler, he is considered one of the region's most important architects. Gill broke away from the Arts and Crafts style as early as 1906, embracing the possibilities of modern construction—particularly the use of concrete. He developed a unique and influential stylistic vocabulary of crisp white walls, neat green window frames, flat roofs, and semicircular archways that borrowed from the stucco-plastered missions of historic San Diego. Marvin Rand's photographs beautifully capture the geometry of Gill's elegant forms.
