Description
(Winner of 3 Academy Awards/Best Supporting Actress Oscar (Lupita Nyong'o), Best Writing/Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley), and Best Picture of the Year; Nominated for 6 Additional Oscars, including Best Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Best Supporting Actor (Michael Fassbender)) Critics and audiences alike agreed that this 2013 adaptation of Solomon Northup's memoir of his journey to hell and back is the most mesmerizing and powerful treatment of slavery ever seen on screen. The film won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Picture; among the many other awards were a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Lupita Nyong'o and a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for John Ridley. Chiwetel Ejiofor is Northup, an African American man born free who is grabbed on the streets of Washington in 1841 and sold down south. Nyong'o portrays Patsey, a slave who works alongside him at a Louisiana cotton plantation; her performance met with rave reviews (critic Peter Travers called her "a spectacular young actress who imbues Patsey with grit and radiant grace"). Extras include features on the creative team and the cinematic score.

"Easily the greatest feature film ever made about American slavery."—New Yorker

"Raw, eloquent, horrifying and essential."—Time

"A blistering, brilliant, straight-up classic."—Rolling Stone

"It is Ejiofor—bewildered, sorely tested, morally towering—whose staggered dignity anchors the film."—NPR
