Description
Sometimes pegged as a moralist by readers of The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne actually specialized in dark, evocative short stories that permit a variety of interpretations. Set in medieval Italy, "Rappaccini's Daughter" is the tale of a scientist whose daughter, Beatrice, tends his garden of poisonous plants. Giovanni falls in love with Beatrice, but when she becomes as toxic as the garden, the young man risks both of their lives to cure her. Two other tales from the 1844 collection Mosses from an Old Manse are included here: "Young Goodman Brown," a terrifying account of a witches' Sabbath, and "A Select Party," an allegory set in the Man of Fancy's castle in the air. Simon Schama's substantial introduction provides biographical background on Hawthorne and thoughtful commentary on his works.
