Description
The Jesuit priest Gerard Manley Hopkins's (184489) poetry is characterized by its innovative use of rhythm and rich vocabulary; most of his works, however, weren't published until decades after his death. Reflecting his love of nature and a lifelong struggle with his faith, the poems here include "The Windhover," "Pied Beauty," "Henry Purcell," "The Wreck of the Deutschland," "Heaven-Haven," and "As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame." The first poem in the anthology is "Spring and Fall," known better by its opening lines, "Margaret are you grieving / Over Goldengrove unleaving?"
