These exceptional renditions by the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra of Joseph Haydn's pioneering program symphonies (no. 6, "Le Matin"; no. 7, "Le Midi"; and no. 8, "Le Soir") are performed on period instruments. The many lyrical and challenging passages for solo violin were written for Luigi Tomasini, a virtuoso known throughout Europe.
"The group has outdone itself with this release…. There are countless recordings of these works available, but their programmatic aspects have perhaps never been so vividly realized."—All Music Guide
"Surprisingly, this small group sometimes generates a more aptly imposing effect than larger modern ones have produced in this repertoire…. In all three works—from the comparative intimacy of some movements to the tempestuous ethos of the finale of No. 8 and the witty part-exchanges so typical of Haydn—the Freiburg group is up to the music's demands. Particularly impressive are the attractive colour and virtuosity of the horns in No. 8."—International Record Review
