Description
(Winner of 2 Academy Awards/Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction (Black and White); Nominated for 7 Additional Academy Awards including Best Picture) A pool shark (Paul Newman) plays the famous "Minnesota Fats" (Jackie Gleason) for the world title and runs afoul of a crooked gambler (George C. Scott) in this 1961 release, a double Oscar winner for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction (Black and White). It also received nominations for Best Picture, Director, Actor (Newman), Actress (Piper Laurie), Supporting Actor (Gleason and Scott), and Adapted Screenplay. The DVD featurette spills some of the secrets behind this classic movie (e.g., Newman had never held a pool cue before starring as 'Fast' Eddie Felson; Gleason was so good he could have been a pool pro; and the guy who showed them all the tricks was the awesome pool expert Willie Mosconi). Also included are a documentary on the film and commentary by Newman.

"Fox makes a cool film that bit cooler, with an icy black and white transfer that's clear and sharp."—BBC

"It takes defeat, and a longish dark night of the soul with Laurie, a drunken, lame waif of a woman, before he can summon the self-respect to return to battle. Rossen allows much space to the essentially concentrated, enclosed scenes of the film, and so it rests solidly on its performances. A wonderful hymn to the last true era when men of substance played pool with a vengeance."—Time Out
