Description
Before the outbreak of World War II, Nazi SS leader Heinrich Himmler designed a concentration camp for women, 56 miles north of Berlin. Most of the prisoners were not Jews; Ravensbrück was primarily meant for other such "inferior beings" as Jehovah's Witnesses, resistance fighters, lesbians, prostitutes, and aristocrats—among them New York City mayor Fiorello LaGuardia's sister Gemma. The brutal treatment of the prisoners was handled largely by female SS guards—including forced labor, torture, medical experiments, starvation, and random executions—and in the final months of the war Ravensbrück became an extermination camp, where thousands of women were murdered. Here British journalist Sarah Helm, the author of A Life in Secrets: Vera Atkins and the Missing Agents of WWII, sheds much-needed light on a long-obscured chapter of the war, weaving together accounts from both survivors and guards.

"Ravensbrück helps us understand how thoroughgoing an onslaught on humanity Nazi Germany perpetrated, and how central to its identity was its implacable urge to enslave and kill those it considered undesirable.... Ravensbrück gives us an agonizing sense of the dark heart of the Nazi ethos."—NYTBR
