Description
This stunning recording offers flawless renditions of some of the most affecting songs written by Renaissance composer John Dowland, including "Fine Knacks for Ladies," "When Phoebus First Did Daphne Love," "Away with These Self-Loving Lads," the profound "In This Trembling Shadow," and "Sweet, Stay Awhile!" The performers are soprano Patricia Clark and tenor Edger Fleet (both veterans of the Deller Consort), mezzo Jean Allister and bass Frederick Westcott, and lute player Desmond Dupré (Alfred Deller's accompanist for most of his career). The ultra-high-end digital transfer allows every nuance of the disc's exceptional acoustics to shine. A bonus early music sampler is also included, featuring works by Claudio Monteverdi, Henry Purcell, William Byrd, and others.

"The vocal blend here is ravishing. Seldom have individual singers matched their voices more richly in this repertoire, with Patricia Clark leading with a sweet, soaring soprano, her gentle touch of vibrato ideal for Dowland's melodic lines.... The extended 'Tell me true love' brings opportunities for lovely solo contributions from each member of the team; but most touching of all is the melancholy 'Whenever Sin Sore Wounding,' which shows Dowland at his most profound. The recording of the voices could hardly be bettered.... Full texts are provided. Four Stars."—Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music
