Description
As an alchemist, healer, and Freemason, Count Alessandro Cagliostro (174395) inspired both wild devotion and savage ridicule, becoming the subject of novels by Alexandre Dumas, a drama by Goethe, and possibly the inspiration for W.A. Mozart's opera The Magic Flute. But Cagliostro's sincere belief in the magical powers of what he called the Egyptian Rite of Freemasonry made him dangerous enemies, too, resulting in his arrest by the Inquisition, who condemned him to death for heresy. Along with 16 pages of color and black and white illustrations, Philippa Faulks and Robert Cooper's biography also includes a translation of Cagliostro's The Ritual of Egyptian Freemasonry.
