(Winner of Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor Oscars; nominated for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress) We love this quirky, darkly comic film from 2006 about a dysfunctional family taking a last-minute, 800-mile road trip to get their sweetly cherubic eight-year-old daughter to the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. Failed motivational speaker Richard (Greg Kinnear) and overstressed mom Sheryl (Toni Collette) are joined by Sheryl's suicidal brother Frank (Steve Carell) and her Nietzsche-reading son Dwayne (Paul Dano). Alan Arkin turns in an Oscar-winning performance as the foul-mouthed, drug-addicted grandfather who teaches young Olive (Abigail Breslin) a wild pageant routine. The DVD includes four alternate endings to the film.
