Description
This novel by E.M. Forster, written when India was still firmly held by the British Empire, is a brilliant illustration of the tensions between two very different peoples who perceive themselves as being of different races. Dr. Aziz, a well-respected Indian with an active mind and inner life, is unconvinced that the English and the Indians cannot be friends. He takes a group of English newcomers—Miss Adela Quested, Mrs. Moore, and Cyril Fielding—under his wing, and becomes good friends with Moore in particular. But on an outing to the Marabar caves, Miss Quested accuses Aziz of sexual assault. She recants at his trial, but not before the mistrust and prejudice that separate them all become clear. In describing why the novel was considered one of the Books of the Century in a 1924 New York Times article, Herbert S. Gorman said, "a single reading of A Passage to India settles the question. Mr. E.M. Forster is indubitably one of the finest novelists living in England today, and A Passage to India is one of the saddest, keenest, most beautifully written ironic novels of the time.... [It] is both a challenge and an indictment. It is also a revelation."
