Description
A classic and part of the standard repertory in his native land, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's four-act tragedy from 1898 is performed here by an all-Russian cast, recorded in 1992 at the Bolshoi Theatre. Ekatarina Kudriavchenko stars as the ill-fated Marfa, desired by all but selected by Ivan the Terrible to be his betrothed, while Nina Terentieva is her jealous rival Lyubasha. In the dramatically difficult role of the lascivious Grigory Gryaznoy, Vladislav Verestnikov was praised by Gramophone for projecting an "increasing and destructive tension, while also a certain magnificence." The liner notes include a full plot synopsis and a brief history of the opera.
