When this release came out on Deutsche Grammophon in 1986, Gramophone praised its "very engaging recording quality … the marvellously finished performances and the generously well-conceived coupling." Russian-born virtuoso Shlomo Mintz and Israeli-American pianist Yefim Bronfman interpret with brio two great sonatas from the 20th century (Maurice Ravel's Violin Sonata in G and Claude Debussy's Violin Sonata in G Minor) and one from the late 19th century (César Franck's Violin Sonata in A). Mintz performs on a Guarneri del Gesů violin dated 1700, noted for its burnished tone.
"I have few reservations in placing this splendidly polished CD at the top of the list."—Gramophone
