When acclaimed tenor Peter Schreier retired in 2005, the last role he performed was as the Evangelist in J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio; this effusive 1976 recording of the sacred masterpiece finds Schreier very much in his prime. Other noted Bach performers featured here include soprano Arleen Augér as the Angel and bass-baritone Theo Adam as Herod, while for Martin Flämig and the Dresdner Kreuzchor (Dresden Boys' Choir), this six-part oratorio about the birth of Christ is part of their annual repertoire.
"[Flämig's] soloists are of the best.... Orchestral playing is superb in all departments, the trumpets dazzling."—MusicWeb-international.com
