Description
His life straddled two centuries, and consequently Carl Nielsen's (1865–1931) six symphonies present an intriguing opportunity to see Romanticism give way to modernism. Specialists in 20th-century repertoire, the Janácek Philharmonic Orchestra is led here by the highly sought-after international conductor Theodore Kuchar in a complete traversal of these works. The early symphonies are soundscapes in the tradition of Sibelius, while the innovative 1920–22 Symphony no. 5—perhaps inspired by World War I—famously features a snare drum aggressively disrupting the orchestra. Joyful and off-kilter, the Symphony no. 6 ("Sinfonia Semplice") shows how the Danish composer assimilated the music of the 1920s into his own distinct style.

"Theodore Kuchar's 2006 set with the Janácek Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most accomplished Nielsen cycles around.... The dimensions of the orchestra's sound are deep, the frequency range is wide, and the acoustics of the Ostrava Concert Hall are naturally responsive, so conditions are nearly ideal for Kuchar's unadulterated and utterly transparent readings. The results are direct, forceful, and sometimes searing in their intensity ... the emotional impact of the music is every bit as strong as the composer intended."—Allmusic.com
