Description
Originally produced in 1952 for Omnibus—a distinguished television series hosted by Alistair Cooke that ran from 1952 to 1961 and won more than 65 awards including nine Emmys and two Peabodys—this five-part biopic of Abraham Lincoln is scripted by Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist and screenwriter James Agee. Royal Dano stars as the 16th president, while Joanne Woodward portrays Ann Rutledge, often considered the love of his life; Agee cameos as a friend of Lincoln's. Notably, some of the funeral sequences were filmed by Stanley Kubrick, at the outset of his career. DVD extras include an interview with Agee and historian Allan Nevins, as well as the made-for-TV play Lee at Gettysburg, the short feature The Four Flags of the Confederacy, and an excerpt from a 1955 adaptation of Uncle Tom's Cabin.

"The true strength of James Agee's film on Lincoln lies in its narrative power. Artful cinematography is combined with careful, poetic writing to create a compelling and deeply melancholy portrait of one of America's most beloved presidents."—Popmatters.com
