Description
Inspector Morse does not suffer fools gladly; nor can he abide thieves, murderers, and blackmailers. In "The Settling of the Sun," a Japanese student is murdered in a ritualistic fashion; in "Last Bus to Woodstock," Morse uncovers malfeasance at an insurance office; in "Ghost in the Machine," he grapples with the morals of the aristocracy; in "The Last Enemy," a rivalry for a prestigious university post leads to murder; in "Deceived by Flight," a member of an Old Boys' cricket team is killed at their annual match; and in "The Secret of Bay 5B," a playboy architect is found strangled in his car, with the only clues being his diary and a car park ticket. "Few actors have evoked greater feelings of affection and admiration," wrote the Daily Mail in its tribute to the late John Thaw, whose long run as television's Inspector Morse was one of his signature roles. "He was one of the most versatile and believable actors of his generation." Tooling around Oxford in his vintage Jaguar, Morse is a solitary, romantic, and enigmatic detective who never uses his first name and who finds solace in real ale, classical music, and tricky crosswords. He is ballasted in his inquiries by the down-to-earth, working-class Sergeant Lewis, played by Kevin Whately.

"One of the most popular and enduring of fictional detectives."—Sunday Telegraph

"Serious entertainment of the highest order."—Entertainment Weekly

"It is the casting of John Thaw as Morse which most significantly shapes the series… [with] the continuing pleasures of Thaw's grumpy, economical and … profoundly televisual performance."—Encyclopedia of Television
