(No. 175 on Rolling Stone's List of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time) This second studio album by the superb brother/sister duo of Richard and Karen Carpenter came out in 1970; besides the Burt Bacharach/Hal David title track, it yielded another gold record (and signature song): "We've Only Just Begun." Originally written by Ralph Carmichael for the Christian musical Tell It Like It Is, "Love Is Surrender" features Richard on lead vocals (he also sings lead on Paul Williams's and Roger Nichols's "I Kept on Loving You"). Other highlights include covers of the Beatles "Help" and Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe," as well as more top-flight Bacharach tunes ("I'll Never Fall in Love Again" and "Baby It's You") and the pop/medieval/jazz suite "Another Song."
"Richard Carpenter's originals 'Maybe It's You' and 'Crescent Noon' are superb showcases for Karen Carpenter's developing talent, the latter a superbly atmospheric, hauntingly beautiful art song … gorgeously arranged. There's also a Swingle Singers–style number, 'Mr. Guder,' showing off their paired vocal talents and more of Richard's arranging talents."—All Music Guide
