Description
It was 1921 when Lord Peter Wimsey first encountered the Attenbury emeralds. The recovery of the magnificent gems in Lord Attenbury's dazzling heirlooms made headlines, and also launched a shell-shocked young Wimsey on his career as a detective. It is now 1951, in this 14th mystery in the series (following A Presumption of Death), and a happily married Lord Peter has just shared the secrets of that mystery with his wife, the detective novelist Harriet Vane. Out of the blue, the new young Lord Attenbury, grandson of that earlier client, seeks the sleuth's help again—this time to prove who owns the gigantic emerald that Wimsey last saw in 1921. In 1936 Dorothy L. Sayers began writing Thrones, Dominations, her 12th Lord Peter Wimsey novel, then set it aside. When a fragment was re-discovered in her agent's safe, six decades later, the trustees of the Sayers estate asked Booker Prize finalist Jill Paton Walsh to complete it. "It is impossible to tell where Dorothy L. Sayers ends and Jill Paton Walsh begins," noted Ruth Rendell in London's Sunday Times. "It is simply like reading another Sayers novel.... All Sayers's gift for lyrical description in here, and her passion for resonant prose." Paton Walsh has since continued the adventures of the well-to-do sleuth, giving us entirely new works from the golden age of mystery writing.

"A pitch-perfect Golden Age mystery; not a pastiche but a gem of a period puzzle that belongs on the shelf beside the Wimsey originals."—Financial Times (London)

"Sayers would not have recognized that it wasn't her own work."—Times (London)
