Description
(Winner of 2 Academy Awards/Best Supporting Actress (Peggy Ashcroft) & Best Original Score (Maurice Jarre); Nominated for 9 Other Awards) David Lean's last film, based on E.M. Forster's classic novel of love and class struggle in 1928 India, was nominated for 11 Academy Awards in 1985, including Best Picture. It tells the story of a young English woman (Judy Davis) who travels to India to visit her fiancé, the city magistrate of Chandrapore. While sightseeing with her fiancé's mother (Peggy Ashcroft), she befriends a young Indian doctor (Victor Banerjee) who, overstepping the accepted boundaries between classes, invites the women on an ill-fated picnic in the Marabar caves. This two-disc Collector's Edition includes seven featurettes on Lean and the making of his final masterpiece.

"Forster's novel is one of the literary landmarks of this century, and now David Lean has made it into one of the greatest screen adaptations I have ever seen.... [He] is a meticulous craftsman, famous for going to any length to make every shot look just the way he thinks it should. His actors here are encouraged to give sound, thoughtful, unflashy performances ... and his screenplay is a model of clarity."—Roger Ebert
