Description
In 1958, the Stoney Mountain Boys were included on the first-ever bluegrass album, and the following year, they became the first such band to play at Carnegie Hall; that the group isn't more famous now can only be attributed to their preference for playing far afield from the usual bluegrass venues. As heard on these 20 tracks from 1967, though, Earl Taylor and Jim McCall's country-style vocals and the group's hard-driving rhythms compare favorably with those of Bill Monroe's ensembles. Fans of blazing mandolin and banjo may well appreciate "Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms," "Cripple Creek," "Wreck of the Old 97," the murder ballad "Down in the Willow Garden," and the Carter Family–inspired "Worried Man Blues."

"Taylor worked best with a lead-singing partner who could match his piercing tenor, and none fit the bill better than Jim McCall, a guitarist with a powerful right arm and a vocalist squarely in the 'rear back and let 'er fly' mold. Though their volatile relationship regularly caused the two to work separately, they teamed up long and often enough to record several albums of hard-core, traditional bluegrass that is no better described than by the word 'stout.' [This disc] is one of these.... What shines through here is a spirit as powerful as it is indescribable."—No Depression
