Description
Among the undisputed masters of "American Primitive Guitar" in the tradition of John Fahey, Glenn Jones uses his fingerpicking skills and uncommon tunings to spellbinding effect on his sixth release. Partly inspired by the passing of his mother, these ten tracks fit together to form a poignant and seamless whole. A founding member of the post-rock band Cul de Sac, Jones demonstrates here his gift for creating atmosphere on the sunny "Flower Turned Inside-Out," the elegiac "Close to the Ground," and the more dissonant "In Durance Vile." Recorded in a cozy—but not exactly soundproof—New Jersey studio, the truly ethereal banjo composition "Spoken River Falls" draws to a close as heavy rain begins to fall. Written in homage to a friend's infant daughter, "Cléo Awake" and "Cléo Asleep" contain the same delicate theme, adapted for banjo and guitar respectively.

"[Jones's] records are consistently thematic and thoughtful, exploring ideas that work together rather than merely occupying the same piece of vinyl. [This] is his most cohesive album. Each song flows naturally into the next, with motifs repeated in small variations and moods that connect across track breaks. Many of Jones's artistic concerns—places and environments, musical forefathers, the passage of time—arise simultaneously, as if they're branches of a single tree."—NPR

"Jones is perhaps our most emotive guitarist, and the bittersweet sense of time passing, of lives gone and lives still being lived, runs through this record."—PopMatters
