In 1957, a series of superb Shakespearean recordings began to appear, and soon became the gold standard. Sponsored by the British Council and performed by the Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players, these uncut, full-cast readings of Shakespeare's 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and 4 narrative poems featured such celebrated actors as John Gielgud, Prunella Scales, Ian McKellen, Trevor Nunn, Peggy Ashcroft, Patrick Wymark, Michael Hordern, Derek Jacobi, and Diana Rigg. The original Argo studio recordings, performed from the texts of Cambridge University's authoritative New Shakespeare editions, were widely praised by reviewers: "Beautifully read, the music of the verse becomes explicit," noted the New York Times, while London's Observer proclaimed, "The job could hardly have been done better." Assembled for the first time into a complete one-box library, these recordings have been painstakingly remastered on 100 audio CDs for this limited edition set—part of the international quatercentenary Shakespearean celebration. They are presented in a deluxe case with a beautifully illustrated companion volume containing full cast listings, analysis and commentary on each play, historical content, and photographs and press reviews from the original releases, with extra content available on a dedicated website. Very few of these Complete Works have been imported into the United States, and we have secured the lion's share.
