Description
This third volume of The Gonzo Papers is a decade-by-decade survey of stories, letters, journals, and articles from Hunter S. Thompson, allowing readers to trace the evolution of his reporting style throughout his career. With stop-offs at the infamous 1974 Democratic summit conference that Thompson staged at a remote crossroads in Nevada, the Fall of Saigon in 1975 (an assignment he was fired from while en route to), and Palm Beach in the 80s for the Pulitzer divorce, here—in true gonzo fashion—is the long strange trip from Kennedy to Nixon to Quayle. Here too are excerpts from Thompson's novel The Rum Diary (still unpublished at the time) and a would-be novel dubbed "Prince Jellyfish," and the whole collection is bookended with new material inspired by the 1990 search-and-seizure of Thompson's home that led to felony drug and explosives charges. Also including The Great Shark Hunt, Generation of Swine, and Better Than Sex, the four-volume series known as The Gonzo Papers encompass most of Thompson's post-1970s literary output, variously gathering early newspaper and magazine pieces, excerpts from books published and unpublished, columns from the San Francisco Examiner, and nearly all of his short pieces for Rolling Stone, where he remained on the masthead as chief of the National Affairs Desk.

"Mr. Thompson's best work of the past three decades."—NYTBR

"That our guru has made it this far merits drinks and dynamite all round at the Woody Creek Road and Gun Club (and spiritually affiliated North London branches). That he is still alive, and at large, defies medical and legal beliefs."—Literary Review (London)
