Description
Now one of roots music's most admired performers, Gillian Welch looks back 20 years to her Grammy-nominated debut with this set of demos and outtakes from her first recording sessions. Produced by T Bone Burnett and with Welch accompanied by David Rawlings on harmony vocals and guitar, this set includes variants on such songs as "Orphan Girl," "Annabelle," "Pass You By," "Acony Bell," and "Tear My Stillhouse Down." From that era, here too are eight previously unreleased tracks, among them "Go on Downtown," "Georgia Road," "455 Rocket," "Wichita," "Riverboat Song," and "Old Time Religion."

"[This] is one of the era's most influential albums, its retro stylings and bleak evocations of the dust bowl era marking the transition from alt-country to Americana. Welch's revivalism was no Carter Family copyism; here was a startlingly good songwriter who could put you in the place of a barroom girl or mountain moonshiner with a few piercing images. David Rawlings's impeccable picking and harmonies sealed the deal."—Guardian (London)

"It's fascinating to follow along as Welch and Rawlings feel their way to their singular sound.... In the early- to mid-'90s window captured on this collection, Welch was a different singer than the one listeners have come to know, swinging a little harder at times and bearing down a bit more.... The whole thing serves as a tremendous reminder of how and why this partnership came to matter so much."—NPR
