From 2006 to 2009, documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark hauled her enormous Polaroid 20 x 24 Land camera to senior prom events at 13 schools from New York to Texas, Virginia to California, creating large-format portraits of young people from a diverse range of backgrounds on one of the most memorable nights in their lives. The 127 page-filling photos here are reproduced in rich detail, while quotations from student interviews punctuate the series of images. Mark's husband, filmmaker Martin Bell, collaborated with her on the project and produced a film—also called Prom—that features interviews with the students about their lives, dreams, and hopes for the future. The book includes a DVD of the film.
