First published in 1894, Paul Carus's introduction to Buddhism collates various historical accounts of the Buddha's life into a cohesive narrative, with extensive quotations throughout from the Enlightened One. This "gospel" tells the story of the Prince Siddhattha, whose disillusionment with the world prompted him to give up family and fortune to become a holy man; upon mastering the Four Noble Truths, the prince became the Buddha. In the appendix, Carus supplies an extensive glossary and a systematic comparison of the lives of Buddha and Jesus. Along with color illustrations by contemporary artist Keichu Yamada, this book also includes Olga Kopetzky's elaborate line drawings from the 1915 edition, and Martin Verhoeven's book-length introduction.
