"I mean to do something grand. I don't know what, yet; but when I'm grown up I shall find out," says Katy Carr. A teenager in a small midwestern city, Katy tries to be an angel—but it's so hard to behave when there is mischief to be made, siblings to lead in delightful schemes, and fussy Aunt Lizzie to avoid. When Katy ignores a word of caution, however, disaster strikes and everything changes for her. The fictional Carr family was modeled after the author's own in this first of the Katy Carr books, for readers 8 to 12. Susan Coolidge was a contemporary of Louisa May Alcott (who even edited one of Coolidge's books), and it's only too easy to imagine her headstrong young heroine as a bosom chum to Jo March. This Egmont Heritage book is a really lovely little edition, ideal for travel, for reading aloud, and for reacquainting readers with a classic tale they may remember from their youth. The unillustrated text is presented in a cloth spine with gold stampings and an illustrated cover, as well as printed endpapers, a ribbon marker, and sewn binding.

"This tale of a boisterous child coming into maturity reads with the same zest and insight as it would have done when it was first published over 130 years ago."—Guardian (London)
