Famous for his paintings of French Polynesia, full of vibrant flora, exotic women, and brilliant color, Paul Gauguin began painting as an untrained artist in his spare time. Though he aligned himself with the Impressionists, and called himself a Synthesist, Gauguin is now considered by art historians to be a post-Impressionist artist.
