Description
In the 1920s, music scouts with cutting-edge recording technology set out across America—from the Mississippi Delta to the Mexican border, and from the Appalachians to Hawaii—to capture the voices and music of everyday people, and in doing so, setting off the Big Bang of popular music as we know it today. Robert Redford narrates this three-part PBS series, which uses interviews as well as archival recordings and footage to recapture the moment when music helped Americans to gain a new understanding of their nation's diversity and history; among the musical pioneers profiled here are the Carter Family, Charley Patton, Blind Willie Johnson, and Mississippi John Hurt. Using the only operational 1920s recording device, T Bone Burnett and Jack White demonstrate how a vintage studio session worked, with performances by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Rhiannon Giddens, Pokey LaFarge, Beck, Elton John, Bettye Lavette, Los Lobos, and Willie Nelson with Merle Haggard.
