There's more to Brazilian music than bossa nova, as this eye-opening anthology demonstrates; taking their cue from the Beatles, the bands here crafted pop masterpieces but with little hope of comparable recognition. Baby Do Brasil makes use of a sitar on "O Jarro," Mini Box Lunar mixes a marching band with electric guitar on "Amarelasse," Quintal De Clorofila gets far outside the box with the freeform chamber music piece "Jardim das Delicias," and the Gentlemen rock out à la Santana on the instrumental "Sorriso Selvagem." Along with liner notes on this fertile yet neglected genre, this set includes a bonus disc, Jupiter Maça's 1996 album A Sétima Enfervescencia, which covers the full spectrum of classic rock without abandoning its Brazilian roots.

"A striking record to listen to; quirky and whimsical, it captivates attention while evoking emotion with its smart, capricious songwriting.... [This disc] is the quintessential introduction to the Brazilian psychedelia scene, past and present. Any fan of the genre that is on the relentless quest for the obscure will be sure to find this as the perfect starting point."—PopMatters.com
