Description
Among composer Samuel Scheidt's (1587–1654) organ works here are the graceful Cantio Sacra, the profound Hymnus, and the massive-sounding Toccata super in te Domine speravi. Harpsichord enthusiasts will particularly delight in this set, with Franz Raml playing the Fugue in Four Voices, the stately Fuga Contraria, and the melancholy Echo, while the arresting Cantilena Anglica Fortunae is perhaps the high point among these dozen pieces. After studying with Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck in Amsterdam, the German-born Scheidt became a court organist and an educator in his own right. To demonstrate the capabilities of organ and harpsichord, Scheidt composed the multi-volume Tablatura Nova, which—much like J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier—are inspired compositions and not mere exercises. In this volume of the series, Raml continues his groundbreaking traversal of Scheidt's keyboard works.
