(Grammy Hall of Fame Disc Included/Jazz at Massey Hall) Only Bud Powell's death at age 41 prevented him from achieving the same renown as his friend Thelonious Monk, and he remains one of bebop's most adventurous and harmonically sophisticated pianists. Collected here are both volumes of The Amazing Bud Powell as well as such albums as Jazz Original and Piano Interpretations by Bud Powell; of special interest is Jazz at Massey Hall (1953), uniting Powell with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, and Charles Mingus on "A Night in Tunisia," "Perdido," and "Salt Peanuts." This four-disc set includes 82 songs, among them "Un Poco Loco," "That Old Black Magic," "Body and Soul," "Celia," "Glass Enclosure," "Bouncing with Bud," "Moonlight in Vermont," "April in Paris," and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

"[Powell] was the foundation out of which stemmed the whole edifice of modern jazz piano."—Herbie Hancock
