In director Howard Hawks's World War II noir thriller, a 19-year-old Lauren Bacall makes her film debut as seductive siren in distress Marie "Slim" Browning opposite Humphrey Bogart's world-weary gun runner Harry "Steve" Morgan. Adapted by William Faulkner and writing partner Jules Furthman from Ernest Hemingway's novel, the plot of this 1945 film strongly resembles Casablanca, with French resistance fighters, a bluesy piano man (Hoagy Carmichael), and a Martinique bar like Rick's Americaine. Thick with intrigue and racy banter, the movie is first and foremost a showcase for the talents of Bogart and Bacall, who married shortly after production ended. DVD extras include a featurette on Bogie and Bacall, the Warner Brothers cartoon Bacall to Arms, and a radio production of the film.
