An elevator operator, the wife of a struggling concert violinist, a born-in-a-trunk vaudevillian—they're three different women who share a single dream: to become a Ziegfeld girl. Lana Turner, Hedy Lamarr, and Judy Garland, respectively, play the three vying for stardom; one will find happiness elsewhere and another finds failure and despair, but one of these ladies will have the talent and pluck to make it all the way to Broadway. The Great Ziegfeld director Robert Z. Leonard is at the helm here, but this 1941 film is a typically extravagant Busby Berkeley musical at heart, and includes Garland's calypso-infused number "Minnie from Trinidad" and Tony Martin's "You Stepped Out of a Dream." The many DVD extras include an introduction by Garland biographer John Fricke, two outtakes, an Our Gang short, and the featurette A New Romance of Celluloid: We Must Have Music.
