Description
Colonel Richard Heslop, alias Xavier, was one of Britain's greatest Special Operations agents in France, orchestrating resistance groups and sabotaging German operations from late 1942 through D-Day. Heslop balanced clandestine missions and wartime operations on a daily basis, frequently encountering the possibilities of capture, torture, and death. It was a job that involved acts of espionage, theft, and sometimes even murder, where a careless whisper could let a man fall into the hands of the Gestapo. Heslop's 1970 memoir is gripping stuff, "alive with the high tension of clandestine warfare, and it is distinguished by an intelligence and natural authority exceptional in books of this kind" (Sunday Telegraph, London).
