Combining uncommon artistry in her naturalist drawings and paintings, Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) depicted the flora and fauna of the world in pioneering scientific exploration, including an extended sojourn to Suriname. This poster collection includes such exemplary pieces as a fine portrait of Iris Susiana on vellum, a banana plant and a butterfly from the Saturniidae family, the life stages of a Suriname beetle on the backdrop of its preferred lemon tree, two giant Arsenura armida silk moths flying around a Erythrina fusca tree, and two Menelaus blue morpho butterflies (and their caterpillar) on a pomegranate. Printed on heavy white stock (measuring just over 13¼ x 11¾ inches) with generous borders, these superb reproductions are captioned on the reverse, and suitable to be removed and framed.
