Description
In the wake of World War I, spiritualism enjoyed a new vogue as bereaved families longed for proof of life after death, resulting in a wave of mediums clamoring for attention. The wife of a Boston surgeon, Margery Crandon became a standard bearer for those who longed to see the paranormal enshrined as a science; this charismatic blonde's alleged ability to communicate with the dead earned her the nickname "the Witch of Lime Street." As David Jaher reveals here, Crandon made a convert of Arthur Conan Doyle, who urged her to submit her abilities to scientific testing. Although Crandon impressed four judges, the fifth was none other than Harry Houdini, a man who knew fraud when he saw it. The two engaged in a very public feud, which Jaher chronicles in this "utterly spellbinding" (NPR) history.
