Description
Born Cyril Kenneth Bird, Punch cartoonist Fougasse was noted for his economical drawing style and his witty observational humor—elements that lent themselves perfectly to the art of the miniature book. Here he gives us the original illustrated story of a fairy who, one stormy night, is blown out of fairyland and lands in Eaton Square, London, where he is soon arrested on a charge of "mischief-making in costume." Though he proves he is a fairy—if not a very talented one—by flying about the police station, he decides to try his hand at London life, under the name of Joe Smith, in this remarkably petite volume from the library of Queen Mary's Dolls' House. One of the finest architectural models ever built, the Dolls' House was originally intended as a grand gift for the queen, an inveterate collector of miniatures. It soon became a showcase for Britain's manufacturing industries, still recovering from World War I, and thousands of companies, craftsmen, and artists vied to contribute to this widely seen and celebrated replica of an aristocratic Edwardian residence. One of the most important rooms was the library, with tiny volumes written specifically for it by Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, J.M. Barrie, Somerset Maugham, and A.A. Milne, to name just a few. With a ribbon marker, gilded page edges, and foil-stamped cloth covers, this superb replica of an actual volume in the Dolls' House Library measures just over 1¾ inches tall. Presented here in a full-sized clothbound case (so as not to get lost on the shelf), it comes with a colorful booklet containing the history of the Dolls' House and an illustrated transcript of the book (which is a bit easier to read than the handwritten original).
